The UGC-NET exam consists of two papers – Paper I and Paper II. Both papers are conducted in a computer-based mode. Here is a detailed exam pattern for UGC-NET:
Paper I:
- Duration: 3 hours
- Number of Questions: 50
- Total Marks: 100
- Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
- Marking Scheme: +2 for each correct answer, no negative marking
Paper II:
- Duration: 3 hours
- Number of Questions: 100
- Total Marks: 200
- Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
- Marking Scheme: +2 for each correct answer, no negative marking
Both Paper I and Paper II are compulsory, and candidates have to attempt all questions in both papers. Paper I tests the candidate’s teaching and research abilities, reasoning, and comprehension skills. Paper II is subject-specific and covers various disciplines such as economics, management, history, sociology, psychology, and many others.
To qualify for the exam, a candidate needs to score a minimum of 40% aggregate marks in both Paper I and Paper II. However, candidates belonging to the reserved categories (SC/ST/OBC/PWD) and Transgender are given a relaxation of 5% in the aggregate marks.
Overall, the UGC-NET exam tests the candidate’s knowledge and aptitude in their chosen subject and assesses their eligibility for the position of Assistant Professor/Lecturer or for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges.
